Monitors. Amazon Basics only makes 1080p panels. Our monitor guide tells readers that 1440p is the practical sweet spot and to skip 1080p, and a $115.99 house-brand 1080p monitor does not change that. Adding it would have contradicted our own advice for the sake of one more listing.

Smart plugs. This is the more interesting rejection. The Amazon Basics smart plug is $25.99 and works with Alexa only — no Matter, no HomeKit, no Google. The Kasa Matter two-pack we already recommend is $20.89, and the Tapo Matter mini is $11.99. It is more expensive than both and locked to one assistant.

The trap: a house brand is a pricing strategy, not a promise. It is priced against the category average, not against the best-value product in the category — so wherever a specialist is already fighting a price war, the house brand can quietly end up the expensive option.
